Message:: This new names in Harar came from invader Menlik then Haile. Harari Regional State can not solve it alone. Each individual of us should be active to rectify this Amharanization of Harar land. Email google, state department, etc. The Amhara's feudal kings ruined the unity of the country by imposing their religion and culture on others. They name schools, squares, hospitals, etc in their religion name and culture. What a blunder. Americans never did this when they incorporated California. Still everything remained same.

Message:: Huri from Harar:the breacking news from Harar.Today on 4/13/2011 one of the official of Harar Municipality was shot by to brothers in front of the police station in Feres megala on 6 pm.These guys repeatedly thretening the official for illegal land holding and when refused they tried to hit the official named Hashim IDris.Ut was reported that yesterday night they came to his house with guns and try to shoot some bullets.Although it was reported to the police by the municipality through formal letter, the police hardly take any action exceprt detaining the gungsters for temporal time. And as soon as they released by the police they tried to kill him in public place -feresmegalla.It was very disasterous merder attempt. Now he is in comma. These guyes hit police officer named yahya inside the police station but no not enjailed for such acrime. The police commisioner ,Bekri who is inefficient hardly keep peace and order in the region.Just becouse he is one of the close friends of the Presedant Murad Abdulhad he can maintain his post.May be he steps down with the presedent.THe critical problem in Harari Region is that the appoint usually be made not by merit or efficiency-educational quaification and performance.Rather most of the time his excellency appoint his close relatives and friends in key position irrespective of their work performance.First of all how about he.But how long we are suffering from lack of good governance and rule of law.

Message:: In 628 AD, a delegation from St.catherine's monastery came to prophet muhammed (s) and requested his protection. He responded by by granting them a charter of rights. St.catherine's monastery is located at the foot of Mt.sinai and is the world's oldest monastery, it possessess a huge collection of christian manuscripts, second only to vatican and is a world heritage site, it also boasts the oldest collections of christian icons, it is a treasure house of christian history that has remained safer for 1,400 years under muslims protection.

PROPHET MUHAMMED'S PROMISE TO ST.CATHERINE- This is a message from muhammed ibn abdullah, as a covenant to those who adopt christianity, near and far we r with them. Verily i, the servants, the helpers and my followers defend them, because christians are my citizens and by allah i hold out against anything that displease them. No compulsion is to be done on them. Neither are thier judges to be removed from thier jobs nor thier monks from monasteries. No one is to destroy a house of thier religion, to damage it, or to carry anything from it to the muslims houses. Should anyone take any of these he would spoil God's covenant and disobey his prophet. Verily they are my allies and have my secure charter against all that they hate. No one is to force them travel or to oblige them to fight, the muslims are to fight for them. If a female christian married to a muslim it is not to take place without her approval. She is not to be prevented from visiting her church to pray. They churches are to be respected. They are neither to be prevented from repairing them nor the sacredness of thier covenants. No one of the nation (muslims) is to disobey the covenant till the last day (end of the world).

Wednesday, 26 August 2009

Harar, August 22 (WIC) –Two of the three ally asphalt road projects being built with over 27.7 million birr in Harar town have been finalized, according to Harari State Administration.

Administration Finance and Economy Development Bureau Head, Ahmed Abdosh, told WIC the construction of the projects have been launched last budget year. According to Ahmed, the two roads are open for traffic now and efforts are also underway to finalize the remaining road project. The state administration allocated budget for the construction of the roads, it was learnt.

Haremaya University under expansion drive

Harar, August 24 (WIC) – The Haremaya University said it is undertaking the construction and expansion of 14 projects with more than 41 million birr.

University Health Science Faculty Dean, Melak Damena, told WIC that the projects are being carried out in the premises of health science and medical college in Harar town.

The government earmarked the budget for the execution of the projects which include expansion of four students’ dormitories and three classroom buildings.

Seven service buildings consisting offices, a library, computer center, laboratory, and warehouses are also among the projects under construction.

Upon going fully operational next academic year, the projects would help enroll over 3, 240 students.

Message:: One of the winners of the Green Award organized here Tuesday by Forum for Environment was the Harari Regional State from the category of civil society organizations. The Harari were awarded a trophy from the hand of Girma-Woldegiorgis, president of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, for their old tradition of planting indigenous trees and keeping the environment clean and efficiently managing water so that the scant supply of water reaches all homes by means of a fair distribution.

Message:: Lake Haramaya (in Oromia), once more than 10 miles around and 30 feet deep in places, was not a huge lake. But for decades it provided water for Harar, one of Islam’s holy cities with a population today of about 100,000. Nearby Haramaya University was named for the lake and a still active university website says the campus overlooks “beautiful Lake Haramaya.” But the website is dated 2000. Back then, fishermen worked the lake and farmers relied on it to irrigate their fields.

Now Harar gets by on water drawn from what remains of an underground pool beneath Lake Haramaya’s bone-dry basin as it awaits completion of a new system that will pipe water from 30 miles away.

The new system will not provide water for the region’s farms. Some farmers have found water by drilling into Lake Haramaya’s dry basin. But they have had to buy pumps. Farmers without extra money have watched their crops suffer. Most of the fishermen have moved to another shrinking lake over the next range of rolling hills.

One would not go wrong in saying:

“They were wise without education but now in our time they are ignorant with modern education”.

Who are they?

Message:: 1543-52 Regent Dowager Sultana Bat'ial Dël Wanbara of Harrar (Ethiopia)

Also known as Bati Del Wambara she was ruled the territory after her husband, Imam Ahmad died in battle. She reigned jointly with 'Ali Jarad. She had accompanied her husband on his expeditions of conquest in the Christian highlands. At times she had to be carried on their shoulders up and down steep and rocky mountain slopes, twice in a state of pregnancy. She gave birth to Muhammad in 1531 and Ahmad two years later. After the defeat and death of her husband and the capture of her young son Muhammad, she fled to the northwest of Lake Tana, and eventually succeeded in returning to Harar, then at the centre of Adal power. Her first task was to make arrangements for the exchange of her eldest son Muhammad for Emperor Galawdewo's brother, Minas. Del Wanbara was determined to revenge her husband's death and, nine years later, agreed to marry the Emir of Harar, Nur Ibn Mujahid, son of her first husband's sister, seeing in him the best prospect of achieving her aim. Emir Nur began by rebuilding Harar, which had been sacked, and enclosed the town with a wall, which can be seen to this day. Having reorganized his forces, he undertook a new conquest of the Christian highlands and, in 1559, killed Emperor Galawdewos in battle. She was daughter of Imam Mehefuz, governor of Zayla and de facto ruler of the state of Adal. She married Imam Ahmad and, ignoring the protests of his soldiers.

WOMEN OF POWER IN ETHIOPIAN

LEGEND AND HISTORY

by Rita Pankhurst

"Highly placed Ethiopian women, who combined worldliness, politics and religion are seen again and again in Ethiopian history. Rita Pankhurst recalls how women have been as important and influential as any man."

" After Eleni's death Emperor Lebna Dengel's own wife, Sabla Wangel, began to assume as significant a role in Ethiopian history as Eleni's had been. This was the time when Imam Ahmad ibn Ibrahim, nicknamed "Gragn" - the left-handed - led a revolt from his birthplace in the Emirates of Adal, in the lowlands towards the southern entrance to the Red Sea."

At times with the help of Turkish musketeers, he conquered more and more of the Christian highland state, so that the royal family had constantly to be on the move. Sabla Wangel's eldest son was killed in battle and her fourth son, Minas, was taken prisoner, saved from execution by Ahmed's wife, Del Wambara. Sabla Wangel shared in her husband's attempts to stem the Adal tide until he was forced to find refuge on the impregnable top of Mount Dabra Damo, where he died in 1540.

Sable Wangel's second son, Galawdewos, then came to the throne and the war continued. While he was fighting in the south of the country a year later, the long-promised help from Portugal arrived. From the mountain fortress in the north, where she had remained after husband's death, the Empress negotiated with the Portuguese before descending to their camp. She was met by their commander, Christovao da Gama, the son of the explorer Vasco da Gama. Seated on a mule she reviewed the contingent of 400 Portuguese troops who paraded in front of her.

Sabla Wangel's presence rallied support for the Portuguese whom she advised, encouraging local farmers to supply them with provisions. Many joined the Portuguese to drive out the invader, whose soldiers burnt many settlements and churches. She was present during a number of battles, tending the wounded, tearing her headgear and clothes to make bandages, and mourning the dead, among them the Portuguese commander himself. In 1543 the remnants of Christovao's force helped Emperor Galawdewos defeat and kill Imam Ahmad. The latter's wife, Bati Del Wambara, succeeded in escaping, but her son, Muhammad, was taken prisoner.

Sabla Wangel was then able to negotiate the exchange of her son Minas, for Ahmad's son, plus a ransom in gold. Minas had been handed over to the Turkish Sultan, Suleiman the Magnificent, as a symbol of Adal vassalage. The exchange succeeded, despite doubts on both sides, thanks to the joint efforts of the two women, Sabla Wangel and Del Wambara.

Six years of continuous fighting later, Galawdewos was killed, after which his brother Minas came to the throne. During his four-year reign Sabla Wangel continued to be influential in court and religious affairs. In the controversy engendered by the Jesuits, who had entered the country during Galawdewos's reign, and were aiming to bring Ethiopia into the Roman Catholic fold, she was a steadfast supporter of the traditionalists who wished Ethiopian Christians to remain Orthodox. But this did not prevent her from interceding on behalf of foreign Roman Catholics who had fallen foul of the Emperor. Her intervention saved from execution both the Portuguese adventurer Bermudes, who had angered Galawdewos, and the Spanish Jesuit Patriarch Oviedo, whom Minas had condemned. Her last achievement was to ensure that her grandson, Sartsa Dengel, one of several rival contendants, came to the throne. Her choice was a wise one as he succeeded in defending the integrity of the realm throughout his thirty-four year reign.

Sabla Wangel conformed to the model of wise Ethiopian queens who were deeply involved in affairs of state, while retaining the qualities of gentleness and mercy often attributed to women. It fell to her to live in dangerous times, which required not only diplomatic talents, but also courage and fortitude in battle and defeat. Many women refugees today would have particular sympathy for her sufferings and endurance.

Del Wanbara - literally "Victory is her seat" - held the title of Bati. A contemporary of Sabla Wangel's, she was the daughter of Imam Mehefuz, governor of Zayla, a port on the Gulf of Aden close to what is now Djibouti. He was also the de facto ruler of the state of Adal. She married Imam Ahmad and, ignoring the protests of his soldiers, accompanied him on his expeditions of conquest in the Christian highlands. At times she had to be carried on their shoulders up and down steep and rocky mountain slopes, twice in a state of pregnancy. She gave birth to two sons - Muhammad in 1531 and Ahmad two years later - during campaigns in the mountains of Tigre.

After the defeat and death of her husband in 1543 and the capture of her young son Muhammad, she fled to the north-west of Lake Tana, and eventually succeeded in returning to Harar, then at the centre of Adal power. Her first task was to make arrangements for the exchange of her eldest son Muhammad for Emperor Galawdewo's brother, Minas. She was in a good position to achieve this ambition because Minas's life had been spared through her intervention. It was no easy task, however, as his captors feared, rightly as it turned out, that if released, he might come to the throne, and be a powerful enemy. Del Wanbara was determined to avenge her husband's death and, nine years later, agreed to marry the Emir of Harar, Nur Ibn Mujahid, son of her first husband's sister, seeing in him the best prospect of achieving her aim. Emir Nur began by rebuilding Harar, which had been sacked, and enclosed the town with a wall which can be seen to this day. Having reorganised his forces, he undertook a new conquest of the Christian highlands and, in 1559, killed Emperor Galawdewos in battle, thus fulfilling Del Wanbara's wish to avenge the death of her first husband.

Del Wanbara and Sabla Wangel were in some ways mirror images of each other. Both were strong wives closely involved in their husbands' battles: Sabla Wangel in defending the Christian highland state, Del Wanbara in supporting the attack on it by a Muslim army. Both lost their husbands in the struggle, and knew what it meant to be a fugitive. Both suffered the agony of seeing one of their sons taken into captivity. Both fought with all their might for their sons' release, and had enough influence to achieve it. Thus both were examples of women of immense strength of character, able to fight for their own kin, but also women whose actions inspired their followers and helped change the course of history.

Name: Loan beneficiaries becoming successful

Message:: Thursday, 07 May 2009 Harar, May 7 (WIC) – Some residents of the Harar town said they are improving their livelihood through the loan services facilitated by the state government for low income people.

Among the beneficiaries, Martha Tsegaye said she is leading a stable life by engaging in vegetable and fruit trade utilizing the 2,000 birr loan she obtained from the Harar credit and savings institution.

Fitsum Tesfaye and Tamiru Gizaw also said they are running their own shop and are expanding their business with the loan they obtained from the institute.

Harar credit and savings share company manager, Arif Abdulaziz said on his part that the share company has so far disbursed close to 10 million birr to 2,738 beneficiaries.

He said beneficiaries of the loan service are becoming successful by engaging in fruit trade, commodities

, metal and wood work, hair dressing and other micro and small scale enterprises receiving from 2,000 to 6,000 birr each.

Most of the beneficiaries have reimbursed the loan they received within a year, the manager said, adding the institution has provided over 2.8 million birr in loan over the past nine months.

Name: An Encouraging Development

Message:: Lately, I have been watching the new TV program of Hararis broadcast every Friday (ETV-EST-8:30 – 9:00am) which I thought is an interesting and slightly encouraging development. Although it is difficult to review and critic the program because of its infancy, some of the programs that were presented give a glimpse of hope to the local population who have been waiting for a long time to see from their leaders that they care about them.

As I have mentioned, the program needs a lot of substance and fine tuning to make it worthwhile as a weekly event, but I was in a small way encouraged to see implementations of projects by the local government that makes a difference in the life of Hararis and others. Again, there are so many major issues with the leaders that need to be addressed to give a chance for Harar top achieve its potential, but I hope that the baby steps I saw in the program is a harbinger of good things to come for our people back home.

In one of the half-hour episodes, one of the news items was two Harari volunteer medical doctors who gave their time freely to treat the local population. Dr Lukman and Dr. Ilias came from Addis to give their specialized service to the locals and helped a number of patients and gave lessons to other doctors. Yes, in the grand scheme of things, some might consider this a very small project, but I hope it will be the beginning of something great and it will encourage other Hararis in other fields to provide their services to make a dent in the lives of the people. What I noticed watching the program is the lack of a normal everyday service from a hospital for lack of supplies and expertise. A simple bone fracture that went untreated for years until these doctors came to the scene gave me an a appreciation for what I take for granted living here in the west. I would like to thank these doctors from the heart and I hope they have taught us a lesson for the rest of us in volunteering for the good of something greater than our interest.

The second news item that was no less important than the first was the project to make the roads of Jugal level and smooth for the in habitants to navigate easily. I saw the video of some completed projects and others in progress and gave me a little hope that changes are coming in bits and pieces. I was impressed with this particular project because it is a somewhat difficult one because it is made of very carefully carved small cobble stones that I first saw in one European country. And before they did the road work, they put a drainage system for the water that used to flow openly in the streets. Not only the roads are straight and level, they are dry and sanitary and I hope a good preventive measure for so many ailments. They interviewed several Harari residents to get their feedback on the project and there was so much praise for the effort. And no matter what my views are on the Harari leaders, I will always say thank and congratulate them on a job well done when I see one. I say keep up the good work and let us proceed to the more challenging ones waiting in line.

Name: Harar - The living museum

Message:: Brendan and Jen in Ethiopia, working in Harar, Ethiopia

A few weeks ago we did the tourist thing and went around Harar to see why it is considered an upcoming backpacking/tourist destination. A big group of us either from VSO (myself, Jen and Ben) and a few Americans from the university spent all day touring around and taking pictures (A few of which are predictably on FB)..............

Harar was a pretty important city for a long time and is widely thought of as being the fourth holiest city in Islam (I think there is a big drop off after Mecca and Jerusalem). This is because a lot of Christian killing was launched from it, a number of Islamic poets originated here and because there are also a ridiculous number of tiny mosques dotted about. This is set in a city where the people themselves are not generally overtly religious and Christian killing is now frowned on.

The city itself is in two parts, the old walled city known as the Jugol, which is where most of the Muslims live and the new city that is sprawled around the wall and predominantly inhabited by Christians. The Jugol itself is straight out of ‘Arabic picture postcards vol 1’ and is distinct from every other Ethiopian city. You could be forgiven for thinking you are in Yemen. It comes complete with narrow winding paths, hundreds of laden donkeys, crowded market squares, people screaming at each other, strange chanting coming from mosques and homicidal taxi drivers.

Tucked away down narrow paths lie museums, markets and other fantastic sights that pull in a fair number of tourists and makes the locals think anyone who is foreign is a walking cash dispenser. I have probably mentioned it before but most Ethiopians automatically assume that all foreigners are stinking rich and just waiting to be asked for money. You can usually put them off with a few words in Amharic but within the streets of Harar people can get a little more insistent. Even other VSO’s who come to visit comment on the increased hassle within Harar.

Although we have been here for a few months and know our way around Harar and the Jugol we have had to treat some areas of the walled city carefully because it is very easy to get lost without a guide. So some of the places we visited were new to us as well. Highlights include the meat market watching huge eagles and vultures scavenge scraps, the brewery and views from the Rimbaud house.

However the big event was clearly feeding the hyenas in the evening! There are a family of nutters who live just outside the city and have adopted a pack of wild hyenas to the point that they all have names and are really fat from all the free meat. Having them come up to you and grab chunks of meat from your mouth is awesome (awful breath though). It does look like a scene out of ‘When animals attack’, and you are just waiting for a voiceover saying ‘these tourists thought feeding wild hyenas was a good idea, little do they know that these hyenas want more than scraps…’. I am looking forward to doing it again when friends and family come to visit; I might even get a decent picture of Jen feeding them second time around.

There is a real buzz to Harar and you feel like you are living somewhere special, from visiting other Ethiopian towns and cities we feel lucky to have hit such a fantastic place, now all I have to do is find some decent cheese.

Name: Nation said doing well to hit target in foreign trade

Message:: Sunday, 29 March 2009 Addis Ababa, March 29 (WIC) - The Dire Dawa branch office of the Dire Dawa branch and two associations said that the country will score the plan it set in the micro and small scale sector in this fiscal year.

Head of the office with the ministry of trade and industry, Zerihun Ashebir, chairperson of the Bargelle Construction, Umer Ibro and chairwoman of the Misale Consumers' Association, Kongit Asferachew said that the encouraging results registered in various export sectors would contribute towards achieving a 11.2 per cent national economic growth.

According to the head only in the last six months close to 93.8 million USD was secured from the export of coffee, Khat, livestock, fruits and vegetable from east and west Hararge zones, Harari state and Dire Dawa town. The export earnings exceed that of last year same time by 10 per cent, he added.

The export earnings the country secures from the export sector would greatly contribute to speed up the economic growth being registered in the country, he added.

Mayor of the administration, Adem Farah also said that the good results achieved in the investment, micro and small scale business, agriculture and the export sector would contribute a great role for the national economic growth

The economic growth registered over the last five years would also be repeated this year, he said, adding that the projection of some international organization against Ethiopia’s estimation was baseless.

He also pointed out that the government is working hard to minimize the negative impact of the global financial and economic downturn on the country's economic growth.

The Harari Sport & Cultural Event: By Brother Surat

The 13th Harari Cultural & Sports events just concluded in Dallas and I have learned that the success of the event was beyond the expectation of the organizers. Truth be told, I have a mixed feeling about the whole thing. On the one hand, I want to express my joy about the event and thank those who have put their effort to make it a success. On the flip side, I canʼt help feeling disappointed by the nature of some of the events which I failed to see any cultural value at all. Let me elaborate.

Since the beginning of the summer event, there were two major parts that have become the mainstay, namely the soccer competition and the weekend parties. Eventually, other events were added that were more in line with the Harari culture and way of life. And these were the Harari Day show (Cultural show), Ziwariq (picnic) and Mawlud. Since I have participated in all of these additional events, I believe that they have added a measure of acculturation to the diaspora Hararis who are not totally connected to their culture. And I would like to see more manpower spent on these events to make them worthwhile. But let me get back to the original two components of the events and see if anyone else shares my concern

In my view, the soccer program never got off the ground from the inception. The level of skill never seems to improve from year to year. I understand that all the players are volunteers who participate to add color to the program, but there is little improvement to show for when the players hit the field every year. There hardly was a complete team from any number of the cities who participate in the event. Players are haphazardly gathered from any city and are persuaded to play for any team that is short. Most of the time, players start practicing for the games a month or two before the event although there might be a team that practices most of the year. Believe me, I really do understand the problems facing many of our communities in trying to do their best by organizing a team and sending them for a tournament because I was once part of an organizing team for such an event. But somehow we were unable to make a dent in the normal progress of having a good team that we can all enjoy watching them play. I am sure this is one of the areas that newly reformed Federation should focus to see some changes. Let us face it, in order to be true to the spirit of the event and continue calling it a sports and cultural event, we should at least make an effort to show some improvement not only in soccer but in all other fields of sports that include women and children as well. I have seen some improvements regarding programs for children but women have never been a priority of the organizers judging by past experience. And I hope to see some improvement there.

But the last issue I would like to deal with is the gala nights. The program was first started to give chance for our Harari performers to showcase their talent and entertain the crowd. And here is my dilemma and a major concern which needs to be discussed as an important issue. Let me just say what is obvious on my part; I have always liked Harari music and am still partial to it and listen every chance I get. And I am sure most of the people who go to gala night have the same passion for Harari music as myself. But I am not exactly sure when it started, what I am hearing about these events is way past onesʼ love for Harari music. If some non-Harari person accidentally enters this party hall, I am confident that he will flatly deny that these are Hararis. Of course, assuming the person is familiar with Harari culture and people. The skimpy dress of our girls, and the mothers who dress no better than their daughters and do not mind what is going on, the free inter-mingling of Harari men and women on the dancing floor, and good number of young Hararis who get a fix of their alcohol from the outside, etc. is definitely not a scene that is attributable to a hundred percent Muslin society. Most of you who are familiar with the party scene surely know what I am talking about but nobody seems too concerned for the issue to merit any discussion. The scene I just outlined is in total contradiction of the basic tenets of our religion and should be a point of discussion if we at all call this a cultural event. It is high time to remember that our culture and way of life is more or less inter-twined with our religion and it is difficult to delineate where one starts and the other ends. It should be the concern of every Harari worthy of the name to find a remedy before things totally fall apart.

I understand that the party night is a major attraction of the event. Probably most of the participants in the event come for that purpose only. Well, if that is the case, we need to search deep within ourselves and examine our beliefs and morals because I really feel that we are at a cross-road. I am a strong supporter of these summer events that bring Hararis from near and Afar. So many lost friends have found each other and it has become a meeting venue for a number of family and friends. There are so many good things about the event that we should make every effort to preserve it, but at the same time we should be able to find a solution to some of the pressing problems that is facing us square in the eye.

Harari officials campaign in Addis

By Abiy Demilew

A delegation of senior officials of the Harari Regional Government, led by Murad Abdul Hadi, President, held discussions with Hararis living in Addis, in a campaign for attracting and encouraging investment to the ancient town of Harar.

The regional government plans to embrace the private sector involvement in the development of the town, especially encouraging Hararis living in Addis, it was reported.

In the recent Harar Revitalisation Forum, held in Harar town two weeks ago, President Murad noted that the regional government will work closely with the private sector, in attracting investment to speed up the development of the town.

“The private investment sector is among the stakeholders listed to take part in the activity to develop the basic facilities in Harar,” senior official told Capital.

The regional government wants to uplift Harar in speeding up development activities with the support of major stakeholders and this is part of that initiative and commitment, according to the official who posed for few words with Capital.

Harar lacks modern amenities such as hotels, restaurants, hospitals etc and suffers from a chronic water shortage. Each resident now gets five gallons of water per day. Harar also faces a challenge to meet the demands of the 4500 tourists who visit every year. The character of the Old Town desperately needs to be preserved, while at the same time the infrastructure and housing conditions need to be improved for the residents, according to the study that was presented on the forum.

“This is the first ever large campaign to involve this number of senior officials for a special mission” disclosed the official.

“Economic Model for the Revitalization, The overall economic model for the revitalization (the source of revenues resulting from the revitalization and how they would be captured to repay the cost of the effort) will be a key output of the Forum. The economic model is expected to include a role for the Harari diaspora,” according to the study presented on the forum three weeks ago.

Gursum Community in Diaspora Applauds the Italian research team of Mount Kundudo.

GURSUM COMMUNITY IN DIASPORA NEWS RELEASE

The Fugnanbira Community Group Association

www.gursum.com Email. Fugnanbira@rogers.com

March 6, 2008

Gursum Community in Diaspora Applauds the Italian research team of Mount Kundudo.

This was confirmed today in a letter sent by Gursum Community Vice President Meftuh Shash to Professor Marco Vigano and his team.

Mr. Meftuh Shash in his letter to the research lead said:

We applaud you and your team for your initiatives and bring to light one of the most beautiful and breath taking high mountains in East Hararge region (Kundudo) of Ethiopia with its unique wildlife (Wild horses) in the verge of extinction. We strongly believe this region is with high potential for the country’s tourism resources if due attention is given and revitalized and protected as you have indicated in your report.

We are highly in support of Prf. Vigano’s report and recommendations and encourage all the local government bodies, such as the FDRE Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), Ministry of Tourism and International Environmental Protection Program UNEP to give due attention in protecting these environment and saving its unique Wild horses. It is fare to say this region was not explored and little or no attention was given to its wildlife. The study by the team indicates may be these are the only living wild horses found in East Africa and highly potential for the country’s tourism. This area needs active promotions at all levels and facilitating the required amenities.

Mount. Kududo, 3000 meters high located in Eastern Hararge Region of Ethiopia.

Here we would like to take this opportunity to share our experience and adventure trip to this magnificent and one of the highest Mountains in the region, with a very unique plain field that happen to be the home of the exotic Wild Horses in Eastern Ethiopia.

1974 Adventure Trip to Kundudo Mountain:

In 1974, ten of us as young teenagers including myself all of us from the town of Gursum, took an adventure trip to Mount Kundudo in search for the Wild Horses. Our journey started from Mount Stinico in the town of Gursum, were the chain of mountains stretches all the way to Mount Kundudo. After three hours journey on foot, we reached the bottom of Mount Kundudo which was covered by a very thick cloud with zero visibility. Though we had difficulty to find the only narrow ally way entrance to the top of the mountain, finally we reached to our dream height. At the time the plain magnificent field looked like a green golf course. On the beautiful landscape on top of the Mountain we met with a colony of Baboons to the east of the entrance and around 10 beautiful Wild Horses to the West. We were so excited to meet these beautiful horses and as they see they had company they started moving away. As we approach them for a close look they started running with a beautiful display. On the other side as we approach the baboons, they quickly took an exit down the mountain to the east. We were all amazed of the height and the beauty of the overlook of the environment, it was just breath taking.

From the pictures released by the research team we also noticed sever environmental degradation on top of the mountain field, which during our trip over 30 years a go, it was golf green plain as if it was trimmed with mower.

Although we planned to camp on the field of Mount Kundudo, this was not possible due to heavy rain fall in the evening and we were forced to climbed down to the nearest town called Fugnan Hujuba. We spent the night over and left for hometown of Gursum the next day.

July 23, 2007 our Journey to Eastern Hararge Regions.

On July 23, 2007, During Harari Millennium Celebration event my colleague and I took a trip to our hometown of Gursum, Fugnanbira. Our Journey began from Harar via Babile for a shortstop at Dakhata Valley, Known as (Marvel Valley of Rocks) and also an Elephant Sanctuary. We found this magnificent valley and natural phenomenon spectacular and have a great potential for tourism. As we arrived to Gursum and toured various areas, we also had the opportunity to speak with the Deputy Administrator of the town and discussed to work together as a community to introduce the regions tourism potentials. Kundudo Mountain Wild Horses were part of our discussion. We were advised that soon there will a documentary to promote the potential areas and we extended our desire to promote our home town around the world to get the exposure needed internationally.

Our way back to Harar we drove the root to Mountain Kundudo, via Awe Bare, Fugnan Hujuba, Ejarsagoro, Jarso, Fellana, Kombolcha and finally our destination the City of Harar.

This was the memorable adventure trip we had ever, traveling over the chain of mountains and hill sides over looking forests, it was just amazing. Although we didn’t climb to the top of Mount Kundudo due to time constrains as darkness prevailed, we enjoyed being just at the bottom of the mountain and took our memories with us that we will never forget and to promote the hometown beauty. It was a great experience for us to be back home after leaving for over 30 years.

Marvel Valley of Dakhata, Babile in Eastern Ethiopia

Harar is also an ancient walled city with ample tourist resources and the administration has been striving to promote its region world wide.

We believe as a community it is our obligation to elevate the awareness in conservation and promote our country’s potential resources for its development. Our community has been promoting conservations and reforestation of the degraded environment of the region as can be seen in this attached document. http://www.wscsd.org/ejournal/article.php3?id_article=232 you may notice our activity on one of our members study paper. We will continue striving in our capacity to communicate with the local administration and our community back home in an effort to help promote our Country’s development endeavors.

We hope to see Mount Kundudo once again revitalized and not only become the home of the Wild Horses but also one of recognized tourist resource for the country.

Capital

By Groum Abate and Muluken Yewondwossen

Junedey Basha General Manager of Harar Brewery, told Capital that the brewer stopped producing its the brand after the local manufacturer stopped supplying the metal bottle tops. He added that the other products of the brewery, Harar Beer and Hakim Stout, have also seen production cut from a capacity of 300,000 hecto litres.

A shortage of cork in Ethiopia has led to the halting of production of one of the country’s longest established soft drinks producers, Coca-Cola.

The East African Bottling Share Company (EABSC), owner and producer of Coca-Cola in Ethiopia, ceased production as of Thursday March 12, after a shortage of cork hit the company.

With 1,000 employees and two factories in Ethiopia, EABSC was shut down after it found it impossible to continue operating.

EABSC used to import crown corks from India. However, the company had to change its client to the 45-year old sole local manufacturer, Ethiopian Crown Cork and Can Manufacturing Industry, some months back after the nation was hit by a severe shortage of foreign currency.

Officials of the company told Capital that the factory ceased production as of Thursday for an unspecified period of time and the board of the share company is excepted to meet next week to decide the fate of the firm.

The company granted forced annual leave to all its employees as of Thursday, until the factories resume production.

The firm was the first Coca-Cola bottler in Ethiopia that started operation in 1959, as the Ethiopian Bottling Share Company operates factories in Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa. After launching its third production line, with a capacity of filling up to 30,000 bottles per hour in September 2007, EABSC increased its production by 50 per cent.

Also due to the cork shortage, Harar Brewery, one of the largest beer producers in the country, has been forced this week to stop production of one of its brands, Harar Sofi, a non-alcoholic drink.

The manager revealed that the cork factory promised them it would resume its supply for the Harar Sofi as of tomorrow, Monday, March 16.

An official at the other government owned brewery, Bedele Brewery, told Capital that production has been cut due to the shortage. According to the official, Bedele has also been waiting for foreign currency for the last three months to import malt and chemical for the production of the beer.

When products that use cork face a production cut, BGI, producers of St. George Beer and Dashen Beer continue their normal production as they import cork from abroad.

In related news, shortage of cork led soft drinks producer, Moha, to cut its production capacity by 35 per cent.

Despite the current production limitation, Moha has registered 12 million birr worth of sales during the last eight months, exceeding the previous year’s total for the same period by nine per cent.

Getachew Birbo, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Moha, told Capital the company has been forced to produce only 54,600 crates which is 65 per cent of crates of soft drinks and mineral water compared to its previous daily production capacity of 84,000.

Currently, the Ethiopian Crown Cork and Can Manufacturing Industry supplies cork to Moha.

“We used to import cork from abroad to fill the material shortage. But now we are using cork from local producers. This time, in order to continue supplying our products to the market, our factories are using from their small stocks,” said Getachew.

Moha, a subsidiary of MIDROC Ethiopia, owns five beverage factories in the country. And recently it bought the firm formerly known as Bure Baguna Mineral Water Company for 27 million birr and has begun producing its mineral water, which is branded Kool.

According to Getachew, the shortage is attributed to a lack of raw materials – a problem he had been promised would be solved this week.

In addition to the raw material shortage, the cork producer was already struggling to meet the demand from the booming water industry. Recently, 65 companies obtained 115 licenses from the Ministry of Mine and Energy to engage in mineral water production.

Since the problems emerged, collecting used corks and delivering them for recycling has become a profitable business for street people and those who were already engaged in the process.

A street child collecting the corks told Capital he is getting 2.30 birr for a kilo.

Moha, after privatizing Pepsi Ethiopia in 1997, has spent more than half a billion birr expanding the factory.

Message:: Harar, January 18, 2009 (Harar)(ENA) - More than 16,000 tourists have visited tourist attractions in Harar Town, Harari State during the past six months. Over 2.1 million Birr income is secured from the visitors, regional culture, tourism and information bureau said.

Tourism department head with the bureau, Abdulnasir Endris told ENA on Saturday that about 3,000 of the visitors are foreigners while the remaining Ethiopians.

Abdulnasir said the number of tourists has increased by 505 as compared to that of same time last year. The number increased following activities undertaken to promote tourist sites in the town and after the town was registered as world heritage.

He said the bureau has been providing necessary information to tourists.

Some of the tourist attractions in the town include, among others, mosques, churches, markets, the historic wall of Jegol, tamed hyenas and Arthur Rimbaud's house . Arthur Rimbaud was the 19th-century French poet.

Name: Lonely Planet editor Tom Hall finds time stands still in an ancient walled city

Message:: Guardian - Ethiopia still has to be the most underrated country in the world in which to travel. Come for rough-and-ready bus and truck journeys, vast meals of injera bread with spicy sauces which cost pennies, and a treasure chest of historic wonders. The country has dozens of great journeys, but a trip east from Addis Ababa to Harar is the pick of the bunch. The fourth holiest city of Islam, Harar has 82 mosques within its 16th-century walls. Among the tiny alleyways are markets, coffee shops and more than a 100 shrines. You'll feel like no one else has stumbled upon it since the French poet Arthur Rimbaud lived here as a coffee trader in the 1880s.

It's likely you'll be taking the bus for much of the 350-mile journey from Addis Ababa to Harar as the train service to nearby Dire Dawa is currently intermittent, unreliable or suspended, depending on who you talk to. Train buffs may have more luck riding the rails from Dire Dawa further east to Djibouti City. Bus travel, however, is an adventure in itself. Long-distance buses in Ethiopia mostly leave at five or six o'clock in the morning (which confusingly is 11 or 12 o'clock Ethiopian time) and for the price of a ticket, government-run buses throw in an elaborate pre-departure ritual including a procession around the bus, led by the conductor.

My bus broke down before it got to Harar and I finished the journey sharing a car with a group of Somalians who wanted me to accompany them to Mogadishu. That was a trip too far, but Harar is the gateway for visits to Somaliland, the breakaway state making up the northern part of Somalia, should you wish to trump your friends once and for all in pushing the frontiers of adventurous travel. Otherwise, with two weeks in Ethiopia, you can linger over the journey to Harar and also take in Lalibela's rock churches, Gondar's royal remains and Axum's ancient stelae columns - the spectacular highlights of Ethiopia's northern Historic Route.

Name: The New Gursum Primary School Project to Open Soon

Message:: The new Gursum Elementary school project is close to completion and soon ready for students to move into modern and bright classes they never get used to. The project was initiated by a foreign aid and believed can facilitate up to 1000 students. The new school consists of library, cafeteria as well as decent sanitation facilities.

During our tour in July of 2007 the FBCGA delegates reported the desperate need of repairs and improvement on all secondary and primary schools and the lack of important facilities to accommodate the growing number of students.

The High School Students also got their wish to network connection to connect to the world on the Internet, although still need more computers to facilitate 70 students who are using only 9 for the class.

The school director and teachers expressed their appreciation to the FBCGA’s tour of 2007 and documentary about their hometown schools ones they attended and grew up in. Since their visit improvements have been made we hope they will attend the 50th anniversary of the school to be celebrated sometime soon.

They were between 19 and 24 years old and lived in extreme poverty, but they demonstrated the potential and initiative to make a better life for themselves. Before attending the school, none of them had used a computer before or had ever dreamed of being an entrepreneur.

I couldn't sleep the night before I flew to Ethiopia. As I said goodbye to my parents on the phone, it took all my energy to hide my anxieties from them. I couldn't bear the thought of adding to their worry which started months ago.

I also had to remain calm in front of my team of English teachers as I would be leading them for the next two weeks into a world of unknowns. I spent most of the eight-hour flight trying to silence my inner voices asking me: "What have you got yourself into? Are you out of your mind?"

As our plane touched down in the capital city, Addis Ababa, I couldn't believe I actually made it. "Oh man, I'm really in Africa," I thought to myself.

Our group was greeted by Daniel Tedros, the general manager of Alchemy World, a microfinance non-governmental organization. While we were in Ethiopia, he was our supervisor, tour guide, and a dear friend who kept us out of trouble -- for the most part.

In Bahir Dar and Harar in northern Ethiopia, we taught students enrolled in a business training school with a concentration on entrepreneurship and microenterprise. They were between 19 and 24 years old and lived in extreme poverty, but they demonstrated the potential and initiative to make a better life for themselves. Before attending the school, none of them had used a computer before or had ever dreamed of being an entrepreneur. With financial assistance, they were taught business, information technology and English for a year and a half. Recent graduates have opened Internet cafes and souvenir shops.

This was the first time for these students to interact, let alone be taught, by a native English speaker. At first they were really shy to speak, but by the second day, they could barely contain their anticipation to greet us and talk our ears off. It was amazing to see such a rapid transformation and watch their eyes light up as we walked into the room each day.

When we weren't teaching we followed a tourist itinerary and embarked on many planned and unplanned adventures. In Addis Ababa, we saw the remains of Lucy, the world's oldest hominid. We visited the most expensive hotel in Africa, Sheraton Addis, and brushed shoulders with African leaders. At a dinner meeting, we met the head of Alchemy World USA, who happens to be the great-grandson of Haile Selassie, the emperor of Ethiopia from 1930 to 1974.

Days later, we trekked through the Simien Mountains in the Ethiopian Highlands, better known as the Roof of Africa, for two days. We were accompanied by our guard named Baze who carried an AK-47 hanging over his shoulder, a smile that showed four teeth and English conversation that consisted of "OK?" and "OK."

I wasn't sure which was more comforting.

On Christmas morning in Bahir Dar, we were awakened by a disturbing vision of a sheep getting slaughtered just 50 metres outside our hotel. In the evening, we went to Obama Café for Christmas dinner and I quietly celebrated my new vegetarian lifestyle.

In Harar, we chewed khat, a mildly intoxicating plant, at dawn and fed hyenas with our mouths at dusk. In Lalibela we saw 12th century rock-hewn churches but got kicked out by a priest who found khat in my friend's bag.

It was the most unpredictable 17 days of my life. I learned so much about myself, the other teachers and of course, Ethiopia.

Most people who aren't familiar with Africa uphold the stereotypes about Ethiopians, or Africans for that matter, as rebels, warlords, naked tribesmen, or poor, helpless and suffering victims who need to be saved by the rich white man.

If we really want to do something to help Africans, we have to recognize most of them don't want to be "saved" by foreigners, and sending our money isn't a panacea to African poverty.

"Free aid is not good for our people," said Bekele, a 65-year-old taxi driver in Lalibela. "My idea is they must make money themselves. If they work, they can have money. It's good."

When foreigners send money, it usually funds projects created by foreigners and based on foreign ideas and methods -- not African. Some African beneficiaries have decision making powers, but not as much as they should.

"Sending money is not effective. Some people have their own plan and you should support their project, because they have their own ambition," said Dr. Heylu, who runs an HIV/AIDS clinic in Lalibela.

I'm not advocating a stop to foreign aid, but I think we need to question how our tax dollars and monthly donations are being used and who it is actually benefiting.

If we really want to make a change, we need to support African solutions to African problems.

Name: Khat -- is it more coffee or cocaine?

Message:: The narcotic leaf is a time-honored tradition in Africa but illegal in the U.S., where demand is growing.

By Cynthia Dizikes January 3, 2009

Reporting from Washington -- In the heart of the Ethiopian community here, a group of friends gathered after work in an office to chew on dried khat leaves before going home to their wives and children. Sweet tea and sodas stood on a circular wooden table between green mounds of the plant, a mild narcotic grown in the Horn of Africa.

As the sky grew darker the conversation became increasingly heated, flipping from religion to jobs to local politics. Suddenly, one of the men paused and turned in his chair. "See, it is the green leaf," he said, explaining the unusually animated discussion as he pinched a few more leaves together and tossed them into his mouth.

For centuries the "flower of paradise" has been used legally in East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula as a stimulant and social tonic.

But in the United States khat is illegal, and an increased demand for the plant in cities such as Washington and San Diego is leading to stepped up law enforcement efforts and escalating clashes between narcotics officers and immigrants who defend their use of khat as a time-honored tradition.

In the last few years, San Diego, which has a large Somali population, has seen an almost eight-fold increase in khat seizures. Nationally, the amount of khat seized annually at the country's ports of entry has grown from 14 metric tons to 55 in about the last decade.

Most recently, California joined 27 other states and the federal government in banning the most potent substance in khat, and the District of Columbia is proposing to do the same.

"It is a very touchy subject. Some people see it like a drug; some people see it like coffee," said Abdulaziz Kamus, president of the African Resource Center in Washington, D.C. "You have to understand our background and understand the significance of it in our community."

Increased immigration from countries such as Ethiopia, Yemen and Somalia has fueled the demand in this country and led to a cultural conflict.

"We grew up this way, you can't just cut it off," said a 35-year-old Ethiopian medical technician between mouthfuls of khat as he sat with his friends in the office.

In the Horn of Africa and parts of the Middle East, khat is a regular part of life, often consumed at social gatherings or in the morning before work and by students studying for exams. Users chew the plant like tobacco or brew it as a tea. It produces feelings of euphoria and alertness that can verge on mania and hyperactivity depending on the variety and freshness of the plant.

But some experts are not convinced that its health and social effects are so benign. A World Health Organization report found that consumption can lead to increased blood pressure, insomnia, anorexia, constipation and general malaise. The report also said that khat can be addictive and lead to psychological and social problems.

"It is not coffee. It is definitely not like coffee," said Garrison Courtney, spokesman for the Drug Enforcement Administration. "It is the same drug used by young kids who go out and shoot people in Africa, Iraq and Afghanistan. It is something that gives you a heightened sense of invincibility, and when you look at those effects, you could take out the word 'khat' and put in 'heroin' or 'cocaine'."

Khat comes from the leaves and stems of a shrub and must be shipped in overnight containers to preserve its potency. It contains the alkaloid cathinone, similar in chemical structure to amphetamine but about half as potent, according to Nasir Warfa, a researcher in cross cultural studies at Queen Mary University of London.

The United Kingdom determined last year that evidence does not warrant restriction of khat. In the United States, the substance has been illegal under federal law since 1993.

But the world supply of khat is exploding. Countries such as Ethiopia and Kenya now rely on it as a major cash crop to bolster their economies. Khat is Ethiopia's second largest export behind coffee.

Khat usage has grown so much in San Diego that Assemblyman Joel Anderson (R-San Diego) wrote a 2008 bill that added cathinone and its derivative cathine to California's list of Schedule II drugs along with raw opium, morphine and coca leaves.

As of Thursday, Anderson's bill made possession of khat a misdemeanor in California, punishable by up to one year in county jail and a $1,000 fine. Possession of the leaf with intent to sell is a felony that carries a three-year maximum sentence in state prison.

In some cases, khat seizures have resulted in warnings and probation. In other instances, like New York City's "Operation Somali Express" bust in 2006, which led to the seizure of 25 tons of khat worth an estimated $10 million, the perpetrators were sent to jail for up to 10 years.

"In my mind, [such arrests are] wrong," said an Ethiopian-born cabdriver who was arrested in November in a Washington, D.C., khat bust and spoke on condition of anonymity. "They act like they know more about khat than I know."

Khat leaves are sold attached to thick stalks or dried like tea leaves. A bundle of 40 leafed twigs costs about $28 to $50.

The plant's cost has been linked to family problems, including domestic abuse, said Starlin Mohamud, a Somali immigrant who is completing a dissertation on khat at San Diego State University.

In fact, within the East African community in the U.S., there are many who welcome the khat restrictions.

"I have seen what it does," Mohamud said. "Families who are trying to make ends meet on a daily basis cannot afford it. It just creates so many problems between a husband and wife to the point where a broken family is going to be the result."

Not all lawmakers, however, support the increased efforts to prosecute khat sellers and users. California state Sen. Gloria Negrete McLeod (D-Chino) called khat use "a minor problem that may be nonexistent and little understood" and voted against Anderson's bill.

"The Legislature cannot continue to add on penalties and punishments filling up critically overcrowded prison system without weighing the consequences on how this will affect California," she said.

Even though khat smuggling continues to grow in the United States, the level is nowhere near that of drugs like marijuana, cocaine, heroine and methamphetamine. Still, law enforcement officials worry that in a refined, stronger and more portable form, khat could spread outside the immigrant communities.

Message:: Ethiopian: Census Data Report Was Rejected by Muslims after Conference

[EMJ] Facilitated by Network of Ethiopian Muslims NEME, Ethiopian Muslim organizations, leaders , activists , associations, thinkers and scholars all over the world had a teleconference on the census data and its implications. The conference was a unique one, as the participants tried to be as much candid as possible and let aside the so called political correctness. The conference was transmitted Live to a large audiences on palktak who had their chance to participate on the conference.

The discussion , in general, continued for about 7 hrs and it would be far beyond this article to convey it. Leaving aside to other mass media the details let us share the core points and the uniqueness of the conference and the discussion.

As there was an absolute consensus ,no time was spent on discussing of the corruptness of the census data at all. For Ethiopian muslims they lived it for along time, even they had a time were their very existence was denied. However, a detail was given on how things were developing for the latest census data, which Muslims had some hope of reversing the denial tradition, including under and above ground actors from insiders.

Muslims organization felt that they were let down by the government. That is after they had a land mark journey which they raised several muslim issues directly with the prime minster, which included the census data. A Badr member and one of the top leaders who led the journey expressed this as the “last one of a chain of our demands that we got it slapped on our face”, despite the promise. “we have been doing this for the sake of our country and the love that we have for it. We know that the country will never prosper as long as the majority who are Muslims are oppressed.”He stressed .

The conference and the discussion was far beyond pointing fingers which Muslims usually do to get a temporary relief to their pain.In fact Muslims focused on self criticisms and self evaluation. They asked their failure to have any kind of impact of what so ever on the ground. ” What would you bring if they were to claim Muslims as 2%?”, one activist asked. A hot debate and discussion followed this reality, to get deeper and touch the reality.

Many found it to be things deeper than simple numbers and far beyond the existing regime. History and experience was briefly visited including the changes the country has seen wih regime changes. ” There are variables and static or invariable parts of policies”, a thinker and a scholar explained. “Policies regarding muslims issues are among the fixed ,unchanging part of the policies”, he continued. He warned that some muslims should not be deluded by the variables, and should not expect that a solution by changing a prime minister or individuals, but within inside.

All participants have come to a conclusion that to shake the invariables and bring justice and coexistence based on mutual respect, muslims should show their existence in reality, regardless of what the paper says. There was an understanding that blame lies on muslims themselves, not on christian elites and media who organized themselves to their own objective no matter how narrow and greedy their target might be.

“Good News! Good News!” it was that amazing person once again. Everybody who is dismayed by what is going on was surprised to hear him saying this at a time muslims thought that the good news are far beyond their imagination.

“You might be surprised that I see a good news at statistical data which slaughtered millions of muslism! That apparently is not a good news, but nothing is new about this. The good news is that a record number of Ethiopian muslims are gathring and patiently discussed this single issue for a record length of time. For the first time I see muslims feeling the pain and expressing their readiness to bring a change. I am optimistic that change is coming and that is the GOOD NEWS.!!!”

Of the how to react a short ,a medium and a long run actions were proposed. They include legal, political and social activities to increase the awareness and expose how flawed the census data is, but in scientific and and organized way.
